Our name derives from our late Grandmother "Lily" who taught us the original "make do and mend" attitude and my sisters "attic" where we meet up.
Granny "Lily" |
Brief History
When our Granny married she relocated from a small street in Belfast to the "sticks" ( very rural coutryside ).Unfortunatley the timimg of this was during the war when things were scarcer than scarce.
Her new farmhouse accommodation was not as she expected and in particular the lack of privacy due to the absense of any window treatments was one thing that really "got my goat" ( annoyed her ).
Thankfully Lily was also a good baker, so she put her ingenuity to the test, combining her skills.
And so............. the original upcycling project began.
Several soda farls ( traditioanl Irish baked bread ) later, some very attractive hessian material had been procured for "nout" from an empty flour bag.
The antique flour bag pictured above is exactly what Lily used to make her new curtains, many, many handwashes coupled with overnight soaks in bleach later. ( the bird image never did completely come out )
Kirstie Allsopp take note.. this "fill your home for free" phase did catch on and Granny Lily was one of "the" original refurbishers. It is vintage now but way back then it was controversal.
Most of the villagers labelled my Granny as "snobby" and too "big for her boots" for dareing to hang curtains on her windows. I mean, what was she thinking ?
Our stamped bird logo is also inspired from that early flour bag motif.

So you can see it has been in our DNA to make and bake, stick and glue for decades and something we get a lot of pleasure from.
Thanks for taking the time to read our intro, we hope you continue to enjoy our "wee" blog and welcome your feedback.
